Alkimos Beach

Wanneroo WA

LandCorp and Lendlease have set a new benchmark for sustainable and community focused living, whilst providing residents with a relaxed coastal lifestyle. The project vision was for a master-planned coastal community of global significance that's moving towards carbon-neutral living. To achieve this, Alkimos Beach was based on upon the following strategic themes:

  • Green Energy
  • Smart Water
  • Connectivity
  • Community Wellbeing
  • Distinctive Design

The sites undulating coastal topography provided the opportunity for the retention of landform to add interest and character to the project. Coastal views and the bushland setting of the surrounding regional open space network creates a dramatic backdrop and outlook for the residents. The design of Alkimos Beach has captured the unique personality of its coastal location and the aspiration to a more dense, vibrant and flexible urban form that incorporates well-designed streetscapes, attractive and engaging public realm and the creation of outstanding public places for a wide variety of people and uses

Innovation

In addition to providing residents with an Energy Smart Home Package, including a solar PV package, electricity monitor and rebates on energy efficient appliances and lighting, Alkimos Beach is the first greenfield community to trial a large-scale community energy storage system. The project will demonstrate how to integrate, operate and manage integration (enabling) technologies with high levels of solar PV in an Australian metropolitan suburb.  A centralised battery will provide customers with the benefits and incentives of stand-alone storage without requiring on-site installation and maintenance.

Community Activation

As there is usually quite a lag between when residents move in and when community infrastructure is built (community centres, sports pavilions), it was decided to introduce a community hub from the commencement of the project. This was the Sprout Hub. Sprout Hub is a portable community hub with a cafe, co-working space, event space, digital community portal, social impact evaluation and community led charitable fund.

Beach Safety

A high percentage of new residents within Alkimos Beach are recent migrants and are not familiar with the WA coastline and its dangers. To educate our residents and provide a safe beach environment, Lendlease and LandCorp have partnered with Surf Lifesaving WA to create WA’s first BeachSAFE Community. Surf Life Saving WA will be based at Alkimos Beach every weekend and public holiday during summer, offering a BeachSAFE zone for all beachgoers.

Recognition

Alkimos Beach was the first greenfield community in Australia to obtain both the six leaves from UDIA EnviroDevelopment and to obtain a 6 Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
