Nakheel commissioned Roberts Day to undertake a peer review of the entire 12,000ha Waterfront City project in November 2006.

Waterfront is located on the western shores of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Waterfront will provide the foundation of a new city with an estimated population of 1.5 million people – twice the size of Hong Kong Island. Waterfront is being developed on the last 15km of natural coastline in Dubai and will provide more than 70km of coastline in total, including the development of 23% of the Arabian Canal.

Roberts Day was responsible for leading a series of visioning, strategy and design workshops, taking the form of a Peer Review over various portions of the Waterfront project area, including The Palm Jebel Ali, Crescent Islands, Phases 1, 2 and 3, G9 and the CBD.

The vision for Waterfront focuses on the promotion of a transit-oriented development around two transit hubs anchoring the eastern and western sectors of the new city and connections from the southern most parts of the development all the way to ferry terminals along the waterfront, and ultimately to the Palm Jebel Ali.

A comprehensive transport system is intended to service Waterfront including novel water based vessels, walking, cycling, and public transport and passenger vehicles. Seamless transport connections are proposed from Waterfront into the existing public transport system of the CBD and the Burj Dubai Metro and Tram Stations.

Waterfront is readily accessible on a local, regional and international basis. Positioned between the leading centres of the UAE, with the capital Abu Dhabi to its west and the commercial hub of Dubai to its east, Waterfront is located close to prime international commerce and industry hubs Jebel Ali Port, Dubai World Central Airport, and the Jebel Ali Free Zone.
