The North Port Quay concept is the most ambitious idea for urban infill yet proposed in Australia.
The vision comprises a major consolidation of urban infrastructure, facilities and housing immediately adjacent to the operating port and City of Fremantle; home of the Australian 1987 America’s Cup defence.
The consolidation is unique in that it proposes a reclamation of 345ha of seabed, to create 100,000m2 of office space, a commercial hub with extensive fine grained civic squares and places, Venice-style canals and bridges, two new schools, 2,200 boat pens, a performing arts centre, a five-star hotel and convention centre.
It may potentially house up to 20,000 people, primarily in apartments, terraces and a mix of compact site homes.
The concept revolves around establishing the world’s first zero-carbon project using wind, wave and solar energy, as well as embedding a diversity of transit opportunities including buses, light rail, water taxis and ferries.
Fundamentally, however, the strength of the vision will revolve around the re-interpretation of a traditional urban fabric inspired by the grain and character of the existing Fremantle centre.
