Point Grey is a spectacular promontory in the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary, approximately 1hr south of Perth and close to Mandurah and Pinjarra. Roberts Day in association with Studio LFA planned and designed a regional level marina and associated facilities which will form the hub of a diverse community of almost 6,000 people. Underpinning the project design is the protection and integration of this outstanding environmental asset with sophisticated urban development.
The marina is designed to perform the dual function of a regional tourist attraction for visitor markets and a village centre that caters to the needs of local residents. The resulting harbour waterfront accordingly forms the armature for a compact, intense and diverse urban core. This mixed use precinct will include a range of tourist accommodation, entertainment uses, residential apartments and retail and commercial activity.
The intensity of the water based core will transition to lower density residential uses, designed and distributed to respond to landform, vegetation and views. The mix of housing incorporated into the project will be carefully planned to satisfy the needs of a diverse household compositions, lifestyles and tastes.
The development will integrate with the natural environment through the use of open space corridors, judicious placement of large lots and the application of environmental sustainable development principles. The design focuses on significant tree retention and ridgeline protection within the proposed urban area, whilst creating local corridors through streets and open spaces to connect with the site’s surrounding foreshores.
The project developer, Port Bouvard Limited, is committed to the creation of a highly sustainable development and has commissioned research into the use of renewable energy technology on site, as well as developer subsidised public transport facilities, including water taxis and ferries to Mandurah.
