A new vision for the Upton Street Precinct of Bundall has been granted ‘state significance’ as a Principal Activity Centre under the South East Queensland Regional Plan.

Roberts Day led a forum process resulting in the Upton Street Precinct being recognised as a catalyst for change on the Gold Coast, creating a new transit-oriented civic centre in a famously linear city. The master plan for the 18-hectare area of Bundall proposed to replace vehicle-dependent light industry with new mixed-use forms suitably scaled at pedestrian level and reaching up to 25-storey towers.

The challenge, as with most renewal projects, was crafting a vision that responded to the diverse interests of the 19 separate landholders. The plan was careful to respect boundary lines that would allow for phased implementation while still creating a coherent pedestrian-scale street network.
